    how to brush your teeth

Brushing your teeth is something you probably don't think much about, especially since you have performed the procedure thousands of times since early childhood. However, the reality is that many people don't understand all the ins and outs of brushing teeth and are jeopardizing their oral health as a result.

Below is a guide to brushing your teeth the correct way and what you should know about the process from start to finish.

Select and Use the Right Toothbrush

The first step in the right way to  brush your teeth is ensuring you have the correct toothbrush for your mouth. Toothbrushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and many have extra features such as rubber gum massagers or specially shaped necks.

However, the most important consideration when choosing a toothbrush is bristle stiffness. Almost all individuals should use a soft bristled brush for their teeth, as hard bristles can cause damage to your tooth enamel.

If you have questions about what type of bristle stiffness is appropriate for you, be sure to contact your dentist for help with making a decision.

In addition, you should always change toothbrushes no less than once every three-to-four months. If you are sick, then you should also replace your brush immediately after you recover; toothbrushes can carry bacteria for lengthy periods of time, and you don't want to risk reinfection.

Select the Toothpaste that Works for You

Before you start brushing, you should decide on a toothpaste that meets your needs and preferences.

There are dozens of brands, formulas and flavors on the market, so picking one that suits your needs may be a little daunting.

However, as long as you select a toothpaste with the American Dental Association seal of approval, you can feel comfortable that your choice is appropriate. In addition, be sure that whatever toothpaste you pick contains fluoride, a vital tooth decay-fighter.

Beyond that, you can select from toothpastes that promise to whiten your teeth, remove tartar, lessen sensitivity and combat gingivitis. Bear in mind that none of these are substitutes for regular dental checkups and cleaning, but they can help keep your teeth cleaner and healthier, too.

Brush Your Teeth with an Effective Cleaning Motion

After putting a pea-sized dollop of toothpaste on your brush, you can start brushing. Unfortunately, many people approach the actual brushing by using random, haphazard motions, and this lessens the effectiveness of their brushing.

Instead, you will want to perform your brushing using a carefully planned and executed motion. Begin by placing the brush against your front teeth, and make circular motions that cause the brush to reach all the way into your gums. Slowly move your brush head along the surfaces of your teeth as you continue brushing in circular patterns.

Do not use a side-to-side motion, as this won't effectively clean the grooves of your teeth, and it can also cause you to miss your gums. Gum disease is a common oral health concern, and failing to brush your gums can contribute to its development.

In addition, do not use undue pressure on your teeth when brushing. A light touch on the brush will provide the most effective bristle action, as hard brushing will do nothing but wear out your brush and possibly harm your teeth enamel.

Keep brushing for at least two minutes to ensure you are making multiple touches on all your tooth surfaces. You can use a timer, play a song, or count to 120 silently while brushing to help gauge the passage of time.
